Mariposa means ‘butterfly’ in Spanish. This name was chosen to represent change. The hungry caterpillar transforms into the stunning butterfly; it delicately dances the dance of life; it moves elegantly with the times; it progresses as nature intends; all the while bringing joy and awe to everything it touches. Just like the caterpillar we can transform ourselves and the land around us into healthy, nourishing and flourishing environments.
Mariposa, an innovative organisation based in Glasgow, inspires & supports communities to help themselves. What makes us different is that we believe in self-reliance and self-maintenance! We help to plant the seeds and teach sustainable ways to let nature do its work. At the heart of our projects are children and youths who like caterpillars are growing and often need extra support to open their wings.
Quotes from participants:
“Mariposa’s work is crucial in an urban society that has become untrustworthy and insular. It broadens the social interaction, maintains the environment and plans for the future” Volunteer
“The most important part of Mariposa for me is the children. We teach, we learn, we play outside in an educational environment and they love it! Every child is equal and every child is smart – this respectable teaching method really encourages them to be involved ” Project Worker
“We have just spread our wings and have a lot more to achieve – there are still many children and families in Glasgow that we need to reach. It is an exciting and worthwhile goal for our future. To see and be part of the change is wonderful.”Coordinator
“The importance of learning about where food comes from, what it does to our bodies and how to grow it safely is so basic, yet it is a theme that globally we struggle with. Mariposa is changing this from grassroots level up.” Volunteer
“When asked, what have you enjoyed most this year? Many pupils in the class replied with – Mariposa Gardening Club!!” Primary School Teacher
